Welcome, Social Coyote!

I put out a post last week about how cities whisper. This was inspired by Paul Graham. Actually, Iโ€™ve gotta give Chad (thanks for coffee!) a paw for sharing this with me. Howl yeah!

Cities have a certain view from the outside world that is rooted in some truth:

New York: โ€œBe powerful.โ€

Los Angeles: โ€œBe famous.โ€

Washington D.C.: โ€œBe important.โ€

But San Diego?

We do have a beautiful coastline, we do have the opportunity to surf or take our meetings outside. Our patio scene is extremely awesome. And weโ€™re a diverse metroplex with TJ just minutes to the south.

But this is only some of what defines us. And this definition seems to be changing.

I had a moment as I was coming up in On Demand tech. A leader (in NY) saw a particularly strong week I had and said โ€œyou must have been hustling from your surfboardโ€! Turns out there are not a ton of home cleaners surfing. I was just working my tail off. Like many in our city.

But this was his New York view of San Diego.

This was not an uncommon theme as I worked for SF based startups either.

And whoโ€™s to say this is all bad either? Not me.

Neal might have said it best:

Today, it's "Change the world, don't tell anyone"
Tomorrow, it's "Change the world and lead out in front [with] our community"

What other perceive as a disadvantage might be just the opposite. Our energy changes how we connect with each other. It strips away some of the formality. We can organize informal gatherings in back yards on patios, as an example.

If we embrace this as a super power, we have the potential to be the most well connected tech scene.

How does a strong pack help us?

The person weโ€™re talking to knows the person we need to connect with. Now itโ€™s no longer about pitching, but story telling and focusing on the connection.

We are far more likely to go out of our way to support a person we like.

My goal is to help build San Diego into the most connected city. And this is done through strong relationships and not with business cards.

We have all the elements here to accomplish this too! And beautiful climate, vibe and the pacific ocean doesnโ€™t hurt.

So perhaps this week, instead of asking someone for help, ask how you can help them.

Iโ€™ve tested this, it will always come back around.
