Welcome, Social Coyote!

Iโ€™ve been overthinking event attendance rates. And where does overthinking get us?

Typically free events have a ~50% show up rate. Often this is hard to track because free events donโ€™t check people in. Iโ€™m not even sure thereโ€™s a simple way to count everyone.

"Letโ€™s circle up and count off starting with: one coyote, two coyoโ€ฆโ€

Weโ€™ve held paid events that had phenomenal attendance rates, and I decided to create a hybrid style event as an experiment to see what would happen.

Hereโ€™s the twist, the event was free, if you attended. Youโ€™d put down a card to sign up, and only no-comment, no-shows weโ€™re charged.

Hereโ€™s what happened at the event:

  • 19 registered

  • 15 attended

  • 3 had schedule changes and emailed to cancel in advance

  • 1 no show

  • It was 100% a great time

  • we had an 80% show rate

  • and a 95% communication rate!

This was easier said than done, I had to use an events platform backwards to run the event, and couldnโ€™t actually โ€œacceptโ€ anyone.

Accept = charged
Rejected = free. In this case it was โ€œcoolโ€ to be rejected.

A few observations:

  • Attendance rates jumped from ~50% to 80%.

  • Communication rates were โ€œhowlingโ€ at 95%. Did we just invent a new metric?

  • I had to welcome everyone individually and โ€œcheckโ€ them in. This was a great experience for me as a host.

The main goal is not to profit off of no shows. Iโ€™m attempting to point out something unique Iโ€™ve noticed about attendance and our culture around communication.

Free events are incredibly powerful, and they bring us all together. But perhaps we should think about how we shift our etiquette when schedules change.

Met up with Rose and the RBL team recently. Weโ€™ve crossed paths a bunch at events, but this was the first real deep dive into how her firmโ€™s set up and how sheโ€™s helping founders like us.

Over coffee, we were talking about ways to help more coyotes in the pack. Rose came up with a pretty cool idea: sheโ€™s opening up 30-minute AMA sessions on Fridays, free for the pack.

These are educational, but if youโ€™re building something and have questions, this is a great way to get a sense of how the legal side works.

Iโ€™m booking one myself, Iโ€™ve got a few trademark questions to sort out.

If youโ€™ve been curious about things like formation, contracts, fundraising or trademarks, you can grab an AMA with Rose. Select the Social Coyotes spot here:
