Hi I’m Yoti, what’s your name?
I go back and forth with my love of name tags.
They’re great! But they also let us off the hook from locking that important information in our brains. I’ve been doing a wild amount of thinking on this and wanted to share a few techniques that might help.
Step 1: The “First Howl” – Active Listening
Most people forget names in the first seven seconds because they’re thinking about what to say next. Pause, listen, and say the name back immediately.
Step 2: The “Coyote Tag” – Association & Memory Hook
Your brain remembers images 65% better than words, so tie their name to a mental picture. If you meet a Luna, picture a full moon.
Step 3: The “Pack Echo” – Repeat and Reinforce
Use their name three times in conversation. When you meet, mid-convo, and when you part ways. “Nice to meet you, Luna.” “Luna, that’s interesting.” “See you soon, Luna.”
Step 4: The “Pack Trail” – Digital Reinforcement
Studies show writing things down boosts memory by 40%. Jot a quick note in your phone. “Luna, AI founder, loves hiking.”
Step 5: The “Echo Howl” – Practice and Play
Try recalling three names after each event. Even remembering one extra name per week adds up to 50 stronger connections a year.
The last thing. Everyone says they’re bad at it. Everyone. So there’s no shame in asking again. Actually, it shows you care.
Enough howling for now. Let’s dive into the week.
Startups move fast: coyote-at-full-sprint fast. You don’t have time to get tangled up in hiring when you should be building, selling, and scaling. That’s where Scott Faurot and Blue Shoe Recruiting comes in.
Scott’s been in the game for 20+ years. He’s placed 1,000+ candidates, survived 5,000+ interviews, and even got recruited by Google (talk about flipping the script). He knows how to track down game-changing talent, so you don’t have to go sniffing around the hiring maze.
Your startup doesn’t need another recruiter. It needs a headhunting coyote who finds ROI-driving, rocket-fuel hires.
So if your team is still running barefoot, maybe it’s time to lace up some Blue Shoes.
