Welcome, Social Coyote!

I heard a quote recently that stuck with me:

โ€œYou have the reputation you deserve.โ€ Itโ€™s a Warren Buffett line.

Actually, Charlie Munger said something similar. (They must have known each other well): โ€œHow to find a good spouse? The best single way is to deserve a good spouse.โ€

Now, this isnโ€™t a dating advice newsletter. But thereโ€™s real truth in those words, especially when it comes to connecting.

Say I spend my time at events making sure 100% of attendees get my business card. Well, now Iโ€™m โ€œthe business card guy.โ€ And when I walk in, people expect a card.

But what if I spend that time learning how to connect people and help them solve problems? Now Iโ€™m โ€œthe connector guy.โ€

And if all I do is howlโ€ฆ well, then Iโ€™m โ€œthe howl guy."

Our strategies shape the reputations we carry with us. They also show the community what we're all about and why they should engage with us.

Itโ€™s not always easy to look in the mirror and see what kind of connector we really are.

But I can say this: if we put in the effort to become the kind of person we would want to connect with, the doors will fly open more often.

And it gets a whole lot easier to make progress on the things that matter to us.

Letโ€™s connect with someone new this week!

Howl yeah Brian Lamb, founder of Promissory

Have you crossed paths with Brian Lamb?

You mightโ€™ve seen him showing up to the Founders Hike with a surfboard under one arm. Co-hosting the first Hike & Surf with Greg. Thatโ€™s innovation.

Maybe you ran into him at the San Diego County Startup Mixer, which he kicked off to bring Husseinโ€™s mixer vibes a bit further south. (Appreciated!)

Or maybe you know him from Trust & Will, one of San Diegoโ€™s breakout startup stories.

Now, Brianโ€™s building something new: Promissory, a startup tackling one very specific (and very useful) detail of building (or investing in) a company: QSBS.

In plain English: If your stock qualifies as QSBS and you hold it long enough, you might not owe any federal taxes when you sell. Even if you make millions.

Itโ€™s cool, Promissory was born from Brianโ€™s own experience as a founder, and now heโ€™s helping others take advantage of it.

If youโ€™re building a business and want to keep more of it when you exit, give Brian a howl. Better yet, meet him in person at his upcoming event: San Diego County Founders Mixer on the 23rd.
