🐺 7 New Events and 1 Thought About Asking Great Questions

Howl yeah it’s Monday!

I spent the weekend building a course for myself to take. I might share it eventually, but that’s not quite the point. I want to get better at connecting, and for me, that starts with asking better questions.

Here’s the funny story that inspired this weekend adventure:

I met someone new at the Founders Hike last week. She mentioned waking up early, coffee still settling in, preparing to hike in the dark—definitely outside her normal routine. She was excited but still waking up.

The first person she talked to hit her with a furball: “So… what do you do?”

For work? For fun? For recreation? Right now? Hiking.

What we do is a huge part of our lives, and figuring out if we can collaborate often starts there. But what we do is just one part—sometimes a small part—of who we are. It’s often more valuable to understand who someone is as a person. Those two things might overlap, but people are often far more complex and interesting than a job title.

A question has the power to unlock new information, but how someone answers matters just as much. Their response points the way to the next question.

And here’s the counterintuitive part: building a genuine connection isn’t really about talking about yourself. It’s about asking thoughtful questions and listening.

In fact, if you’ve read How to Win Friends and Influence People, one of the best tricks for making meaningful connections is to say nothing at all. Just keep asking good questions.
