šŸŗ 9 Events and a New Year filled with connections!

The San Diego happenings you should know about

Howl yeah, itā€™s the last Monday of 2024!

Happy New Year's Eve Eve!

Iā€™ll spare you yet another year-end list and instead share something Iā€™ve been thinking about a lot this year: Potential Energy.

Am I a physics expert? Absolutely not. Iā€™m talking about building potential energy within a community: the ability to give to others without asking for anything in return. Itā€™s a shift away from a ā€œmatcherā€ mindset (if youā€™ve read Givers and Takers by Adam Grant).

Hold up, Iā€™ve skipped ā€œtakersā€? I did this on purpose. Friend of the pack and wise coyote Ashok once told me: a community has a way of weeding out those who only take.

Iā€™m no stranger to the idea that we all need something or we could all benefit from help in some way. But I find it far more powerful to offer support without any strings attached. Do I need help sometimes? Of course, tons of it. But my mindset is less about tracking and recalling favors and more about paying them forward.

There are many ways to do this. One is curating tech events (which might be why youā€™re here). Another is highlighting the cool things coyotes in our community are doingā€”elevating others and making sure theyā€™re on our radar. Not only is this fun, but it also helps us more easily build a web of connections across the city.

The most important thing we can all do is connect people together. Itā€™s actually really simple: double opt-in a connection, start a group chat, then back away and see if thereā€™s a spark. It doesnā€™t always work, but when it does? Magic. And youā€™ve just added some goodwill to the ecosystem. Zap.

Why am I barking up this tree so much? Because as more people offer their energy, something special happens: the community feels more interconnected. Founders meet the right people a little easier; investors find quality companies a little faster, businesses grow, and they hire new people. We all benefit from this energy-building around us.

We could focus on recalling favors, or we could focus on building an even better ecosystem to play in. The latter always comes back around, often in much more beneficial ways.

2024 was great, but Iā€™m looking forward to 2025.
