I have a small chip on my shoulder, and I've never really told the origin story.
I was very early in my career working at Handy, the “Uber” for home cleaning startup. I managed the San Diego and Las Vegas markets because a bunch of New Yorkers thought those two cities were really close to each other.
They sometimes referred to us by city. I was San Diego, and I hung out digitally with Seattle, Phoenix, and Austin.
After a particularly great week, I was grinding hard to source and onboard home cleaners to meet the demand. I was positively called out in a team meeting.
“You must have been working hard from your surfboard, San Diego!”
It was meant to be a compliment. We were doing well. But in my head I took it the other way. I work just as hard as everyone else. And it’s not my fault that I can take a break outside, walk on the beach, or surf!
This fuels me to prove what SD can build, do, and be as a city. And we shouldn’t have any shame in the fact that we can have a founder demo day at the beach.
It’s possible that this perception brings us hard-working people who want a little more sunshine in their lives, and if that’s the case, then I fully support it.
But we’re not all “chill,” and yeah, maybe we shouldn’t care what the outside world thinks.
Maybe we should just continue to build, connect, and grow in our own way.
