I had an iced tea with Betsy Brennan last week. She’s the President and CEO of Downtown San Diego Partnership, an organization improving the downtown district from both an infrastructure and artistic angle.

We looked out over the city from the University Club. There’s a lot happening downtown, and I was surprised by the list of tech companies with a strong presence here. It was awesome to learn from someone who has such a deep understanding of the city’s movements.

Downtown isn’t quite the same as it was before 2020. There’s innovation required as we rethink remote, hybrid, and in-office work, and how that impacts the density and health of our downtown community.

And there are many creative people working on it.

As we talked about the history of downtown, I was reminded that some of my heroes have passed through organizations like this before going on to build something of their own in San Diego.
