Comic Con 2019. Built from spare Lime scooter parts. So heavy.
Someone asked me the other day why I like Halloween so much.
It’s not because I have a 4-year-old or any sort of obsession with skeletons, witches, or werewolves. I don’t even really like scary movies. If you forced me to pick a genre, it’d probably be supernatural, but I’d probably watch it during the daylight hours.
But the honest answer, once I thought about it all week, is pretty similar to why I like startups and the people who build them.
There’s something about the creativity of the costumes. Some people really put thought, time, and have an eye for the details.
No matter what it is, there’s a flavor of the creator.
That’s the same feeling I get when someone describes a business they’re building that solves a problem in a way nobody else is solving it. Like Self Inspection. Get a text, take a few photos of your car, walk away. That’s it, simple and clever. Wildly complex under the hood.
Neither Halloween nor startups require complexity. Some of the best versions of both are simple.
Clever and creative are maybe two of my favorite words in the English language. And they have a touch of the founder/creator’s taste and personality embedded in them.
Yes, we’re throwing a Halloween party. And yes, I love the idea of our builder friends dressing up for the fun of it.
But I’d be just as impressed by a well-done witch costume as a two-story cardboard Transformer. Autobots, transform and roll out!
Most holidays don’t have creativity baked in.
Maybe Halloween is the entrepreneur’s holiday. I’ve never heard that said out loud. But why not be a little weird and try it on?
What do you think? Does this idea scare you, or does it have a sense of howl yeah to it?
