Howlex Waters proposed an interesting idea last time we met for coffee. How do we know we’re “getting connected”? There isn’t really a way to track our progress.

There are LinkedIn connections or how many people we say “hi” to at an event. I prefer the latter.

Getting connected, to me, means knowing a variety of people from different walks of life. Their experiences make them interesting, and it’s not always about how they can help us. Sometimes, it’s just cool to know someone. 

If the mission shifts away from meeting an exact profile to help my business, for example, then we need a new way to organize our networking efforts. Think of it like completing networking quests in a game. This approach still gives us a broad sense of intention when we leave the den.

A few examples:

  • Meet an event organizer

  • Compliment a speaker

  • Volunteer at an event and help set up

  • Find one coyote in the wild

It’s impossible not to meet new and interesting people this way. Plus, a little game never hurt anyone.
