We had lunch the other day with a new friend who has deep roots in the San Diego tech community. He brought up an interesting concept.

During San Diego Startup Week, someone asked an investor how we could become Silicon Valley. The true answer was, “Go back in time and create a chip industry here.”

So, until time machines are invented, we should consider honoring what we’re truly amazing at. What makes us unique?

I often wonder why we all try to label tech communities after San Francisco.

Silicon Slopes.
Silicon Beach.
Silicon… something.

Why can’t we own who we are as a community and break away from trying to be something else?

We’re built differently here. We’re insanely collaborative. We have a unique military angle, a thriving biotech scene, and an incredible “lifestyle” (not a dirty word) community building action-sports businesses. Not to mention a rapidly expanding AI scene supported by a strong university network.

We don’t need to become anything other than what we already are. One of our greatest superpowers is collaboration.

We’ll never be Silicon Valley, and that shouldn’t be our goal.
