I’ve been in San Diego for about 15 years now. Possibly the best decision I made after college was moving here.
Some of you have heard the story about a Vermont kid who needed a little adventure.
But I wasn’t really part of the tech and startup scene until about 2020. So in that sense, we can call it five years.
Being here this long has its advantages. You start to understand how the community fits together. The different groups, neighborhoods, events, and how people move between them.
You even learn what happens when it rains.
That one blew my mind at first. A kid who could handle driving through a foot of Vermont snow suddenly watching San Diego forget how to operate a vehicle.
But there’s also a downside to being here for a while.
You lose the outside perspective. You forget what the city looks like when someone first arrives.
One unexpected benefit of The Social Coyote is that I get that perspective back.
I meet people who are new to San Diego and ask them what they see.
Recently I had that kind of conversation with Max Krueger, who has been getting connected quickly by organizing the AI Tinkerers group here.
His strategy is pretty brilliant.
Find something you care about. Notice the gap. In his case, AI Tinkerers did not exist in San Diego. Then bring a ton of people together.
But what stuck with me most was something he shared over coffee.
He reflected back many of the same community traits I hoped we had when I was first getting connected.
People showing up, welcoming newcomers, and helping each other build.
It’s a pleasure to watch people create something here.
And it’s even better to hear that the way we welcome people into San Diego is exactly the way we hoped it would be.

That's wild. And kind of the whole point.
The Social Coyote doesn't grow because of marketing. It grows because the people inside it think their friends should be coyotes, too.
And they're right, because every new builder who joins makes the whole network more valuable for everyone already here.
More connections, and even more luck surface area.
