CULEX: Bow Capital x UC San Diego Horizon

Good morning, coyote!

You can fill a room with all the right people and still have it fall flat.

We put so much energy into who gets in. Founders, investors, operators, the “right” profiles. But profiles alone aren’t really what makes an event successful anyway.

They don’t tell you much about whether someone's good to have around. A founder, for example, can be generous and curious, or they can be heads-down and only taking. Same with an investor.

Some of the most connected people I know in San Diego are service providers, the exact people a lot of events leave off the list.

So the thing worth curating isn't background. It's intention. A room of curious people who want to help each other beats a room of the “correct” profiles every time.

The challenge is you can't check intention at the door.

There's no box for intention on a signup form. But there's something almost as good: a story. Tell people what the event is, what it isn't, and who it's for, and you get people who show up ready to add to it.

I think that's part of why so many events are going private lately. It's not really exclusivity. It's that the story of who the host wanted there never got told well, and closing the door is easier than telling it.

We forget the room is half the event. The space, the speakers, the pitches, the happy hour, the food can be additive.

But all these are meaningless in an empty room. The people standing next to you might be 50% of why it feels the way it does. And if we don't know what an event is for, we don't know how to be in it.

Maybe that's the whole fix. Not a tighter list. A little more storytelling about what we're building, so people know how to show up and add to it.

Super Coyote

Super Coyote Happy Hour

I'm opening 3 spots.

It took me a couple of years to get connected in San Diego.

I figured out which rooms were worth it, who to know, and how to ask for an intro. Super Coyote is me sharing that, plus a small group figuring it out with you.

You get the Slack where the pack talks between events, the coffees and happy hours, and the Howlpha newsletter every week.

I'm looking for people building something, who are curious about who someone is and not just what they do, and who love this city. You show up, and you give before you ask.

If you want a lead list or a room to sell into, this isn't the place.

Less than a coffee a week, locked the day you join. The first pack sets the tone.

What we’re howling about next week:

Monday, October 5

Tuesday, October 6

Thursday, October 8

Mark Your Calendars

Wednesday, October 21

Thursday, October 29

Monday, November 2

That’s enough howling out of me.

See you in the wild!

Refer a Friend-ly Coyote 🐺

You're already forwarding these events to your friends. Might as well get something for it.

3 referrals = Connector Coffee
7 referrals = a black Coyote Cap. I don't mail these, so we'll trade it over a coffee or at an event.
