Our grandmothers lived in the same town just outside of New York. Cool! Cool? Why does this matter?
It doesn’t matter at all except for the fact that we took a unique path to get there. Neither of us was prospecting but more curious about our backgrounds and we followed a path of curiosity.
I’m no stranger to the fact that we connect to find co founders, customers, get feedback and build. But we don’t always need to take the business card route to get to know each other. We could follow our curiosity first.
The other thing that surfaces from a conversation like is a desire to help without a return in mind, “I like your journey and I bet others might too, let me connect you with x”.
I have a different philosophy than most about connecting and I tend to not think of my goals first. Sometimes this leads to a cup of coffee and a little time spent on a quest in beautiful San Diego that leads nowhere (yet).
Often it leads to interesting stories and details that would never have come up. Like the fact that our grandmothers were prowling the same town just outside of NYC.
My strategy isn’t to figure out where everyone’s grandmothers live. But if I think about it long enough, it could be really interesting, it’s to discover uniquely interesting details about someone that makes building a relationship much more fun.
If I see you at Connect Summer Social this week, I'm happy to tell you about my grandma. She was pretty cool. But that's not entirely the point. We could find something unexpected about our journeys to connect over.
Instead of “what do you do?” this week, let’s try “what’s sparking your curiosity?”
Howl yeah!
